School Improvement Council (SIC)

School Improvement Councils were established by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1977 to strengthen collaboration among families, educators, students, community members, and school leaders in the continuous improvement of public schools. Today, SICs continue to serve as the primary structure for engaging stakeholders in the school improvement process in South Carolina's traditional public schools.

School Improvement Councils play an active role in the school improvement process. Among their primary responsibilities, SICs:

• assist in the preparation of the school's Five-Year School Improvement Plan and participate in its development, monitoring, and evaluation;

• collaborate with the principal on the narrative portion of the School Report Card;

• and develop, review, and distribute the annual SIC Report to Parents.

State law also authorizes SICs to provide advice, assistance, and other support to advance school improvement.

Membership on an SIC is an important form of civic engagement. Whether participating as a parent, teacher, student, community representative, or school administrator, each member brings a unique perspective that helps inform decisions and strengthen the partnership between the school and its community.
